WA has on Saturday recorded significantly fewer COVID-19 cases than Friday, as questions mount on when the Omicron variant will peak in the State.
WA Health recorded 4300 cases on Saturday, down from the 5,005 infections reported on Friday.
The number of West Australians in hospital climbed from 92 to 103, and those in ICU increased from three to five.
There are now 22,757 active cases in WA.
In health advice released on February 18 to support the removal of the hard border, Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson wrote Omicron modelling forecast WA would hit 5450 cases by March 13, with a peak of 9700 by the end of the month.
However, Dr Robertson has since said he now expects the peak to be reached far sooner — between March 14 and 18.
The Omicron sub-variant BA2 — which is believed to be between 30 and 40 per cent more transmissible than BA1 — now accounts for around 25 per cent of all WA cases.
While BA2 has been blamed for a spike in cases in NSW, which has also wound back the majority of its restrictions, Ms Sanderson on Thursday said the strain had been factored into WA’s Omicron modelling and was not expected to result in a higher peak.
