Sydney news: Man charged with burning down Liverpool Council Chambers, domestic violence spikes as coronavirus lockdown lifts - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Arrest over decade-old arson

A man will face court over his alleged involvement in a fire that destroyed Liverpool Council Chambers, causing $27 million worth of damage, a decade ago.

The fire that engulfed the Hoxton Park Road property in August, 2010 in south-west Sydney required more than 80 fire fighters to bring under control.

Investigations revealed the building's alarms had been triggered around half an hour before the blaze.

Detectives charged the 29-year-old Liverpool man with aggravated break and enter and arson yesterday afternoon and released images of a second man seen in the area who they wanted to speak to.

A survey of frontline workers across 20 domestic violence services across the state has found despite coronavirus lockdown restrictions being lifted, there has been a spike in domestic violence cases.

Around half of those surveyed by Women's Safety NSW said there had been an increase in demand for help since restrictions eased.

Hayley Foster from Women's Safety said there had been a renewed threat to women's safety as some attempted to leave violent situations.

"How we've seen that manifest is in more extreme forms of violence, more threats on people's lives as well as the lives of children and pets … more extreme physical and sexual assaults," she said.

Woman charged over romance scam

A woman has been hit with an additional 59 charges after police uncovered a sophisticated romance scam.

The 27-year-old Thai woman was charged in February over an alleged $9 million fraud and money-laundering syndicate targeting the Thai-Australian community across NSW.

As part of an ongoing investigation, detectives uncovered a romance scam, where a number of men were allegedly defrauded after connecting with a woman through online dating platforms.

The woman is now facing a total of 62 charges relating to the alleged fraud and money-laundering syndicate, and romance scam relating to three victims.

Royal commission to hear from Indigenous groups

The bushfire royal commission is today set to hear from a number of Indigenous organisations which will outline how they use fire to preserve the health of the land.

Indigenous groups spanning from Victoria to the Northern Territory will give evidence around the use of hazard reductions to lower the risk of bushfires, which has been the focus of this week's hearings.

Yesterday, Ken Baulch from Bushfires NT told the hearing about programs being used in Arnhem Land, which lifted that area to one of the best managed, in terms of fire control, in the country.

The use of cultural burning to protect the environment is expected to be examined in today's hearing.
