Camden High School the second to close this week due to COVID-19 case - Sydney Morning Herald

Camden High School in south-west Sydney will be closed on Friday after a member of the school community tested positive for coronavirus.

It is the second Sydney school to close over COVID-19 cases in two days, after Lane Cove West Public School was closed on Thursday due to a positive COVID-19 case in a seven-year-old student.

Health authorities earlier on Thursday said they expected more people would test positive for COVID-19 in Sydney before the weekend.

"We expect that in the next 24 hours we'll be talking about at least one, possibly more, cases of transmission," Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

A NSW Department of Education spokesman said Camden High School was working closely with NSW Health to establish close contacts.

He did not confirm whether the infected person was a student, teacher or parent in the school community.

"Students will continue to be supported through existing learning from home arrangements while the school is thoroughly cleaned over the weekend," the spokesman said.

"NSW Education will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to. Further advice on when the school will resume on-site classes will be provided tomorrow."

On-site classes at Lane Cove West Public School will resume on Friday, after the school was closed for deep cleaning on Thursday.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the diagnosis of the year 2 student was evidence the virus was still active in the community "albeit at very low levels".

The student was the state's first new community-acquired confirmed case in ten days.

Mr Hazzard said the child’s symptoms started on Saturday "so hopefully there was no transmission at the school".

Laguna St Public School resumed normal classes on Thursday, after it was closed for two weeks because a staff member who had been in contact with all students tested positive for COVID-19.

Government school students in NSW returned for on-site learning on May 25 after nearly two months of remote learning.

Rose Bay Public School, Moriah College, Waverley College, St Ignatius College, Riverview and Warragamba Public School have all temporarily closed since then due to coronavirus cases in the community.

Authorities have warned short-term school closures would be the norm so long as the pandemic continued.
