NSW residents returning from Victoria have been advised to self-isolate, as people from Melbourne’s virus hot spots have been sent a strong message by the NSW Government.
The state’s Health Minister today told Victorians “we don’t want you to come”, while chief medical officer Kerry Chant advised anyone who has been to a Victorian virus hotspot to stay home for two weeks.
Dr Chant said travellers returning from Victoria should take “precautionary steps” to avoid contact with people in vulnerable communities such as hospitals and aged-care facilities.
She said returned travellers should also “avoid gatherings outside their immediate household for a period of 14 days”.
“It’s just prudent we take this extra level of precaution for people returning from those hot spots,” Dr Chant said.
“And again, I would urge you not to go to Melbourne until the situation is controlled.”
Despite restrictions easing on July 1 — allowing crowds at events — the NSW Health Minister told Victorians today “we don’t want you to come” to watch sports.
The warning comes as Victoria’s coronavirus cases rose by 33 overnight, marking a ninth day of double-digit rises.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the scheduled easing of restrictions from July 1 will go ahead as planned, despite concern over the resurgence in cases in Victoria.
This means indoor venues will be able to operate without capacity limits, providing they abide by the one person per four square metre rule.
Outdoor cultural and sporting venues with a capacity of up to 40,000 people will be allowed to fill a quarter of their seats.
But Mr Hazzard called on Melbourne residents from the COVID hot spots to refrain from attending major events in NSW including AFL and NRL games until the recent spike in COVID-19 cases ends.
The minister said while health authorities battle to trace a growing number of community COVID transmissions across Melbourne’s northwest and southeast, vigilance and caution are needed.
“COVID-19 spreads rapidly, particularly in large gatherings. The NSW Government is calling on Melbourne hot spot residents to not come to NSW and particularly not attend sporting and other major events,” Mr Hazzard said.
“A COVID-19 outbreak like the one we’re seeing in parts of Melbourne could occur in NSW. We have to prevent the virus from transmitting from the current hot spots in Melbourne to NSW residents.
“We are particularly concerned about the dangers which could come from AFL and NRL supporters attending games in Sydney.”
