Coronavirus infections have declined in regional Victoria as stage 3 restrictions start to have an impact, Premier Daniel Andrews has revealed.
Mr Andrews said the total number of regional cases was “down considerably” to 436 as he urged all Victorians to keep getting tested if they had any symptoms.
“Given we have so little flu in Victoria today because of physical distancing and all the other measures we’re taking, if you’ve got symptoms, even very mild symptoms, there’s every chance that you’ve got this,” he said on Monday.
“If you have, then getting tested, staying away from other people, is how we’ll drive these numbers down.”
The Premier said there were 155 active cases in Greater Geelong, 47 in Bendigo and 28 in Ballarat, with residents in those three regional cities urged to keep coming forward and getting tested.
It comes as Australia recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic so far with 25 people losing their fight against the virus overnight in Victoria.
Of the new deaths, one man was aged in his 60s, four women and three men in their 70s, six females and four males in their 80s and four females and three males in their 90s. Twenty-two of the deaths were linked to aged care outbreaks.
The state also recorded 282 new cases, after 279 were reported on Sunday, further indicating that infections seem to have stabilised.
Victoria’s coronavirus death toll is now 334, with the total number of infections at 17,027.
“This is a very difficult day for those 25 families that will be planning a funeral,” Mr Andrews said.
“This is really very, very challenging. This is not just a challenge for older people, this is a challenge for all of us, and we have to do our level best of every moment of every day to try and drive those numbers down.
“In better news, to have another sub-300 day is good in terms of that trend and that movement down towards lower case numbers.”
But the Premier said the fight against the virus was an “ultra marathon” and warned against complacency and Victorians needed to keep pushing forward every day.
Mr Andrews said mystery cases continued to climb, up 148 since Sunday to 3626.
The number of active infections in Victoria is now 7474, with 1064 of those among healthcare workers.
There are 667 Victorians in hospital, with 44 of those requiring intensive care and 32 on ventilators.
The State Government also announced more than $20 million in additional funding to keep more family violence victim survivors safe in their own homes.
Prevention of Family Violence Minster Gabrielle Williams said the funding would mostly be used to help get 1500 perpetrators of family violence, or people who believe they are at risk of using violence, out of their homes and into short or long-term accommodation options.
She said even with stay-at-home restrictions in place, victims experiencing or needing to escape a violent situation could and would not be fined.
Ms Williams said Operation Ribbon – the family violence prevention operation launched at the start of the pandemic – had so far resulted in 16,034 compliance checks, which included 11,291 contacts with survivors and 4742 with perpetrators.
She said those checks had resulted in 4436 offences being detected, including breaches of intervention orders and assaults, with more than 550 perpetrators charged and at least a further 470 arrested.
The Premier on Sunday extended the state of emergency in Victoria for an extra four weeks. It is now set to expire at 11.59pm on September 13, along with Melbourne’s state 4 restrictions.
Since August 2, Victoria has also been under a state of disaster, which can remain in place for up to a month but could also be renewed.
Mr Andrews said the extension would allow the State Government to continue enforcing physical distancing and isolation requirements as well as other directions made by the chief health officer.
