Multiple Sydney venue alerts as CBD cluster linked to northern suburbs, Central Coast - Sydney Morning Herald

Health authorities are working to contain a growing COVID-19 cluster in Sydney's CBD that may have spread to the northern suburbs and Central Coast.

NSW Health issued public health alerts on Thursday for a string of venues visited by people unknowingly infectious with COVID-19 – including several gyms and clubs – in the CBD, North Sydney, the northern beaches and Woy Woy.

Nine new COVID-19 cases were detected in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday and another two were reported on Thursday afternoon, taking the state's total to 4006 confirmed cases.

Victoria recorded 113 new cases on Thursday, its lowest total since July 5. The state's death toll rose to 485 with an additional 23 deaths.

A 61-year-old man has been charged after attempting to sneak into NSW from Victoria on a boat and brandishing a knife when police ordered him to disembark east of Cronulla.

NSW Police said the man became aggressive towards officers, producing the knife.

He was tasered, arrested, and taken to Sutherland Hospital. He was charged with not complying with COVID-19 protocols, granted bail, and is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court on September 10.

Of the 11 cases reported on Thursday, three attended the City Tattersalls Club's gym and two attended a building at 300 George Street, located two blocks from Wynyard station at a busy intersection near retail stores and a food court.

Anyone who attended the gym between 8am and 2pm on August 19, 21, 23 or is considered a close contact of those infected must immediately get tested, self-isolate at home for 14 days, and get retested if symptoms develop.

Visitors to the City Tattersalls gaming areas on August 24 have also been urged to watch for symptoms and get tested if even the mildest symptom develops after a COVID-19 case spent time in the rooms.

Other members of the club who were at the venue during those dates should get tested if they develop symptoms.

NSW Health was also contacting people who were at Fitness First Bond Street in the CBD between noon and 4.30pm on August 20 and 21 to determine their level of contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

David Jones food court in Elizabeth Street in the Sydney CBD was closed on Thursday after a staff member was identified as one of the new COVID-19 cases.

NSW Health said the man did not have contact with the public. His close contacts have been identified and were being contacted, the ministry said.

Another case travelled on a Sydney-bound train on August 24 that left Woy Woy station at 6.31am and arrived at Wynyard at 7.50am. The same day the person travelled on a north-bound train that left Town Hall station at 5.31pm and arrived at Woy Woy at 6.54pm.

On August 25 the same person caught the Sydney-bound train from Woy Woy at 6.31am, arriving at Gordon station at 7.21am and caught the north-bound train from Town Hall at 5.31pm, arriving at Woy Woy at 6.54pm.

Any passengers who shared these trips are considered casual contacts and must monitor for symptoms and get tested immediately if any develop, NSW Health said.

The ministry is also contacting everyone known to have attended the Hunters Hill Bowling Club indoor dining room on August 23 from midday to 2pm.

They are considered close contacts of cases and must immediately get tested, self-isolate for 14 days, even if the test is negative, and get retested if symptoms occur.

People who attended other areas of the club are considered casual contacts and must monitor for symptoms and get tested if any develop.

One of the cases detected this week is a parent of a student at Villa Maria Catholic Primary School in Hunters Hill.

Other members of the family have been tested and returned negative results, including the children enrolled at the school. The family are self-isolating for 14 days.

The Hawkesbury Living aged care home in Richmond went into voluntary lockdown after a confirmed COVID-19 case visited nearby netball courts in Windsor.

Richmond Club Group CEO Kimberley Talbot said the lockdown was precautionary and not a direction from NSW Health.

"We are taking no chances, and ready to mobilise our procedures just in case," Ms Talbot said in a statement.

Confirmed cases attended a number of other venues, and anyone who visited the following locations during these times must also monitor for symptoms and get tested if any develop:

  • 4Pines Manly Brew Bar on The Esplanade; August 23 from 3.30pm to 5pm.
  • The Magpies restaurant, Waitara; August 24 from 11.30am to 1.15pm.
  • Destro’s Pharmacy, 197-201 Victoria Road Drummoyne; August 22 from 11.20am to 11.40am.
  • Fitness First Balgowlah; August 23 from 9am to midday.
  • PRP Diagnostic Imaging, 16-20 Edgeworth David Avenue, Hornsby; August 24, 10am to 11.15am
  • Harris Farm, High Street Willoughby 22 August 4pm to 5pm.
