A man who skipped hotel quarantine then went to the pub looks set to be the first person in Australia to be fitted with a tracking device.
The 53-year-old man returned to WA after visiting family in Queensland, arriving in Perth on Friday night without having applied to re-enter the state.
He immediately complained of non-coronavirus related symptoms, so was taken to hospital by ambulance.
After receiving treatment, he was told to wait for transport to hotel quarantine but left before it arrived, then checked into a Northbridge backpackers had a drink at a nearby pub, contrary to quarantine directions.
Police found him at the pub a short time later, put him into high-security hotel quarantine and told him he would be charged via summons with failure to comply with direction.
Police Minister Michelle Roberts said she was angry the man was allowed into the state without the required pre-approval.
“They shouldn’t be able to get on a plane to Perth if they don’t have a G2G pass - that’s effectively where the problem starts,” Ms Roberts said on Sunday.
Any arrival without the pass would usually be sent back at their own expense but the man complained of chest pains, she said.
Ms Roberts said how the man was handled afterwards was being reviewed.
“He’s proven he is worthy of no trust whatsoever. As a consequence, we are progressing to potentially be able to put an ankle bracelet on him.”
Legislation allowing that was passed earlier this year and 200 of the GPS devices were bought.
The man was tested for COVID-19 and reportedly got a negative result while the manager of the pub closed it for cleaning.
It’s believed some of the other pub-goers then went to other entertainment venues despite being told by police to go home and self isolate.
“If you’re asked by police to do something, I would urge people to do it,” Ms Roberts said.
“Have a look at what’s happening in Victoria, have a look at the number of people who have died there.
“It’s irresponsible not to follow a police direction.”
The man will appear in Perth Magistrates Court at a later date.
