More than 260 Victorians fined for breaching COVID-19 restrictions - The Age

The number of Victorians fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions has risen to its highest level in more than a fortnight, with those nabbed including a man from Melbourne's west who was caught in the CBD at 2am.

A total of 268 people have been fined for flouting the Chief Health Officer's directions over the past 24 hours, figures from Victoria Police show.

Those fined include a man from St Albans who had travelled more than five kilometres from his home to the CBD and was caught breaching curfew while walking along William Street at 2am on Sunday.

Police said the man told them he had been in the city to visit friends at a hotel and have some drinks.

More than a quarter of the 268 fines were for breaching curfew, with 77 people caught in public after 8pm.

A total of 38 people were fined for failing to wear a face mask in public and 13 fines were issued to people at police checkpoints.

Some of the people fined included:

  • A man helping a friend move a television about 25 kilometres from Doncaster East to Dandenong who had stopped to grab a burger from a fast food restaurant on the way.
  • A Berwick woman who admitted to travelling about 25 kilometres from Scoresby to Patterson Lakes.
  • A man who travelled 50 kilometres – 10 times the permitted five-kilometre radius – from Garfield, east of Melbourne, to go exercising and shopping in Frankston.
  • A male who had four friends over to watch the in his bungalow in the backyard of a property in Mount Alexander, in Melbourne's east.

Victoria Police carried out 8126 vehicle checks at checkpoints and 3841 spot checks on people at home and in businesses and public places over the past 24 hours.

During the state's first wave of coronavirus cases, the day police issued the most fines was April 10 – Good Friday – when 183 people were caught breaching restrictions.

More than this number of fines have been issued for breaches of the state's public health directives, which are stricter in the second wave due to stage four restrictions, for the past three consecutive days.
