Vaccine experts are warning the Australian population that life won't return to "normal" this year despite the accelerated rollout of the COVID-19 jab, with the effectiveness of any vaccine only measured once "60 to 70 per cent" of the population is immunised.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison yesterday announced frontline workers fighting COVID-19 will get the first jabs of the Pfizer vaccine as early as the middle of next month after the Government moved forward the rollout from "early March".

Tania Sorrell, chair of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences COVID-19 expert committee, said vaccines were very helpful in preventing the development of disease but it was unclear how effective they would be in reducing transmission of infection.

Professor Sorrell said because of this, we should be "excited but not too excited".

"We need to be realistic," she said. "It is not a magic bullet and we will be living with this for a least the next 12 months".
