Passengers on all domestic and international flights will have to wear masks and people from the United Kingdom will be subject to rapid testing for the new strain of coronavirus before they board flights home, South Australian Premier Steven Marshall has confirmed after today's National Cabinet meeting.
The new protocols were confirmed by National Cabinet at an urgent meeting called this week to discuss the threat of the new UK strain.
As well as tests for UK travellers, other international passengers will undergo ordinary testing before and after their travel.
The Prime Minister is due to hold a press conference at 1pm AEDT but speaking after the National Cabinet meeting, Mr Marshall said the group of state and territory leaders decided on the changes to minimise the risk of the UK strain's impact in Australia.
"We also made a decision within National Cabinet today that we would not be increasing the overall number of international repatriation flights we have coming in," he said.
"There was some pressure for states to increase their [passenger] caps, but South Australia will be remaining exactly where we have, which is at a diminished level from where we were several weeks ago prior to the Parafield cluster."
Mr Marshall said the group had also agreed to declare greater Brisbane a national hotspot.
It comes as Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Greater Brisbane would go into a three-day lockdown after a cleaner who worked in hotel quarantine tested positive for the UK strain.
National Cabinet will now also meet every fortnight.
