Thousands of shoppers who attended the Boxing Day sales at a major Melbourne shopping centre have been urged to get tested now after Victoria recorded a new mystery infection.
The positive case – a man in his 30s – attended the Boxing Day sales at the Chadstone shopping centre and day two of the Test between Australia and India at the MCG.
Both Chadstone shopping centre and the MCG have now been listed as potential exposure sites after the man later tested positive to coronavirus.
The man was at Chadstone from 6am to 2pm on December 26 and visited 10 stores.
Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said both places were being listed as a potential acquisition sites out of an “abundance of caution”.
She said health authorities did not believe the man was infectious while he was at the MCG or Chadstone as he developed symptoms on December 30.
He self-isolated from December 31 and was tested late in the day on January 3.
The Department of Health and Human Services was notified of his positive result on Tuesday.
The list of stores visited by the man include:
- Culture Kings
- Huffer
- JD Sports
- Jay Jays
- H&M
- Uniqlo
- Myer
- Superdry
- Footlocker
- Dumplings Plus
Victoria’s coronavirus response commander Jeroen Weimar said they were tracking the man’s mobile phone movements and would be identifying specific time periods that he visited each store.
“We’re particularly interested in those who went to those stores on Boxing Day and who did not feel well,” Mr Weimar said.
“I do not exclude the possibility of us identifying additional stores through the course of the day as information becomes available particularly through the GPS records.”
Mr Weimar said authorities were trying to identify the source of acquisition, which they believe could have been either Chadstone or the MCG.
Anyone who was seated in the Great Southern Stand in zone five on the fourth level between 12.30pm and 3.30pm at the Boxing Day Test on December 27 has been urged to go and get tested and isolate until they receive a result.
Authorities believe up to 8000 people were seated in the zone at the MCG on day two.
Anyone who was seated in the zone should receive a text message from the Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday.
Mr Weimar said the man had a number of household contacts who had all been contacted and were isolating.
He said the new infection was a concern as it was being treated as a mystery case.
Mr Weimar said authorities did not believe there was any connection between the new case and the Boost Juice case reported a few days ago.
Victoria’s deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng said the man also attended a party on Christmas Eve where a person from NSW was present.
But Professor Cheng said that person hadn’t reported being unwell. He said authorities were still waiting for that person’s test result.
Professor Cheng said it was likely the man acquired coronavirus through household links and the people he visited.
“We’re trying to be cautious. We do have this information about Chadstone and the MCG so we’re trying to get that information out to make sure that we’re not missing anything,” he said.
“There are a couple of possibilities and I think we need to wait for the genomic data.
“I think it’s most likely we have another cluster going on. It is possibly linked to that.”
Professor Cheng said it could also be linked to the person travelling from NSW.
