Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton kicked off his piece by talking to the infectiousness of the UK strain. Here's what he had to say:
"It is certainly the case that this is a more infectious virus.
"They have been different numbers grown around. I am certainly aware of a range of 40 — 70 per cent more infectious, which was out of the UK in the early days.
"That has been claimed to be 34 per cent or thereabouts in more recent times.
"There are weaknesses in the analysis for all of those ranges and numbers.
"The fact is, almost everyone is settling on the fact that it is a more infectious virus.
"As for the median incubation period, the time from being exposed to causing illness in individuals, I have also seen evidence and I can post it that relates to the fact that it might be up to eight days shorter, median, and previous variants.
"In the Victorian circumstances, and it just might be related to randomness, it might be related to the specific cases we have had, but we have had individuals, including this case that was at the private function, two days after being exposed, maybe three days after being exposed, not just infectious but infectious enough to really cause a transmission event at that indoor function.
"So there is an absolute need for a precautionary approach in that regard.
"On the issue of contact tracing, contact tracing metrics are absolutely terrific at the moment in Victoria."
