Her team treated the first COVID-19 case confirmed in January last year as well as Victoria’s last coronavirus patient to be discharged from hospital in November, at the end of state’s second wave.

“I’m really proud to be getting this vaccine,” she said.

“It’s 14 months since we saw the first patient, so it’s amazing we’ve got to this stage where we can be vaccinated to protect ourselves.”

The vaccine dose was administered at the Monash Medical Centre, one of the state’s vaccine hubs.

New Zealand to push for tariff-free trade of COVID-19 essentials at APEC

New Zealand will use its platform as host of an Asia-Pacific trade group in coming months to seek a global approach to coronavirus vaccinations that would eliminate tariffs on goods needed to fight COVID-19.

Amid concerns that smaller nations may be left behind in vaccinating their populations, New Zealand - one of the most successful countries in curbing the pandemic - will make the proposals at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which it will host virtually this year.

“Our message is that to deal with a global pandemic like this we need more global participation,” said Vangelis Vitalis, New Zealand’s deputy secretary for trade and economy, who chairs the APEC2021 Senior Officials’ Meeting.

“Trade is not going to solve the crisis but trade can help,” he told Reuters in an interview.

New Zealand proposes making shipments between the 21 APEC members of medicines, medical and surgical equipment, hygiene products an other goods tariff-free and easing other restrictions on their movement across borders.

The proposal would have to agreed on in the next couple of weeks to get approved at the APEC trade ministers’ meeting in May, Vitalis said.

‘Big game-changer’: Australia’s historic COVID-19 vaccination program launched

By Rachel Clun

State border closures and interstate quarantine regimes could be things of the past within weeks as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout begins to protect the country’s most vulnerable.

As aged care resident Jane Malysiak, 84, became the first person in Australia to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, the Prime Minister – who also got his COVID-19 shot at Castle Hill on Sunday – expressed hope that the rollout would help remove the need for repeated state border closures in response to outbreaks.

Mr Morrison, Chief Health Officer Professor Paul Kelly, and Chief Nursing Officer Professor Alison McMillan were among a small group inoculated at Castle Hill Medical Centre in a show of confidence in the national vaccine rollout.

“I encourage all Australians when your turn comes, as some of us have been privileged enough to do today, to take that opportunity to line up and get one of those vaccines that’s going to protect you, your families, and the whole of Australia,” Professor Kelly said.

Investigators ask for witnesses, footage after deadly Vic-SA border truck smash near COVID-19 checkpoint

By David Estcourt

Police are asking for information and dashcam footage into the crash involving three trucks near the Victoria-South Australian border that killed a man near a COVID-19 checkpoint just hours after the state boundary was snapped shut.

Detectives from the Major Collision and Heavy Vehicle Criminal Investigation Units said the exact cause of the collision is under investigation and asked for interstate truck drivers who witnesses the fatal collision in Serviceton earlier this month to come forward.

Investigators believe truck drivers from either South Australia or New South Wales may have further information about the incident, which left all three trucks on fire just hours after COVID-19 travel restrictions were reimposed in response to a growing outbreak in Melbourne.

Investigators say that a B Double truck crashed into the rear of a stationary B Double truck at about 2.20am on February 11. They say the truck which had been stationary then collided with a B double truck in front of it and all three vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the first truck, a 46-year-old man from Parafield Gardens, South Australia, died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the second truck, a 27-year-old man from Langford, Western Australia and his passenger, a 63-year-old man from Carey Park, Western Australia, was taken to hospital and has since been released.

The driver of the third truck, a 50-year-old man from Melton, Victoria, was uninjured, police said.

Paul Freestone, managing director of Freestone’s Transport, said when the accident happened, that he understood from drivers at the scene that traffic had backed up for many kilometres at the time of the accident.

“There were 150 cars and it [the line] was all the way back to Kaniva,” he told Melbourne radio station 3AW. [A truck driver] came along and he didn’t realise they were all stopped and he was also carting chemicals.

“There’s absolutely no reason for these trucks to be stopped,” he said, crying.

‘Just embarrassing’: Fans boo TA president after mentions of vaccine, Andrews government

By Rob Sharp

The Australian Open trophy presentation at the men’s final was at times drowned out by constant crowd booing after mentions of the coronavirus vaccine rollout and the Victorian government.

Tennis Australia President Jayne Hrdlicka was forced to pause during her speech when she mentioned the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, which launched on Sunday.

You can watch what happened below:

She continued the presentation, but again was drowned out by the crowd when she thanked the people who made the tournament possible over the past two weeks.

“The top of that list is the Victorian government, without you, we could not have done this,” Ms Hrdlicka said before being met again by constant boos from the local crowd. Others in the audience appeared pleased and cheered and whistled.

“You are a very opinionated group of people,” she said as she completed her presentation.

Good morning

Good morning and welcome to today’s coronavirus blog. It’s quite a significant day today since today the first vaccine doses will start being rolled out throughout the country, with high-risk Australians and people working in high-risk virus transmission settings the first in line for a jab of the Pfizer vaccine.

My name is Craig Butt and I will be keeping track of the latest COVID-19 news and updates from Australia and around the world for most of today. As always, send me an email or leave a post in the comments if you have something to share.
