Victorian coronavirus restrictions to ease from midnight, Premier Daniel Andrews confirms - ABC News

Mask rules and caps on social gatherings in Victoria will be eased from midnight tonight and offices will be allowed 75 per cent of their workforce on site, Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed.

From 11:59pm tonight, masks will only be required in high-risk settings such as aged care facilities, public transport, rideshare cars and taxis, and large indoor retail settings such as supermarkets.

People will be allowed to have up to 30 visitors to the home per day, while outdoor gatherings in public spaces will increase to a cap of 100 people.

The settings reflect those in place across the state over Christmas.

Restrictions were tightened over the New Year period to respond to the Black Rock cluster, relaxed and then tightened again to respond to a hotel quarantine worker from the Grand Hyatt contracting COVID-19, and then tightened further for a stage four "circuit-breaker" lockdown as the Holiday Inn outbreak grew.

The lockdown ended last Thursday, but masks have remained mandatory in indoor and some outdoor settings, only five visitors have been allowed in homes and only 20 people have been able to gather outdoors.

Mr Andrews said the "great news" was a credit to all Victorians, and thanked the thousands of close contacts who had been sent into 14-day quarantine as a result of being exposed to confirmed cases.

A density limit of one person per 2 square metres will remain in place in pubs and restaurants, as long as electronic records are kept with QR codes.

Retail businesses have the same density cap, with electronic record-keeping recommended but not mandatory.

Funerals, weddings, nightclubs, libraries, RSLs and community facilities like libraries have the same one person per 2 square metres rule in place.

Beauty services who use QR codes will have the same 2 square metre rule, but that shifts to one person per 4 square metres where manual records are set.

In gyms, the one person per 4 square metre rule remains in place, with exercise classes limited to 100 people outdoors and 50 people indoors.

For the first time since last March, both the public and private sector will be able to have up to 75 per cent of their staff in the office.

Business groups had been calling for the cap to be lifted, as hospitality and retail sites in Melbourne CBD suffered without city workers.

More to come.
