Victoria has recorded two new locally acquired COVID-19 infections in people who were already quarantining after being identified as close contacts of existing cases.
Key points:
- The cases bring the Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport outbreak to 24
- Many close contacts were due to leave 14-day quarantine today
- Premier Daniel Andrews is expected to announce eased restrictions later this morning
The two new infections were detected from 16,594 test results processed on Thursday.
"The two new locally acquired cases are primary close contacts of pre-existing cases and have been quarantining during their infectious period," the health department said in its morning update.
Some 3,500 close contacts of the Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport outbreak were placed in quarantine, with the last of them set to finish their 14 days today.
The contacts are all tested on day 11, and some deemed to be at higher risk are tested again on days 14 and 16.
There were no new cases detected in hotel quarantine. International flights into the state have been halted indefinitely after being "paused" during the five-day lockdown which ended last week.
All of the state's local cases in the past few weeks have been linked to the Holiday Inn outbreak, which now sits at 24 cases, including the two announced this morning.
Fears the more infectious UK strain of the virus had spread from the Holiday Inn outbreak into the community prompted the snap lockdown, which ended at midnight last Wednesday.
Tightened restrictions on private home gatherings and mask-wearing have remained in place, but are set to be eased tonight.
Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday suggested the state could return to the settings in place during Christmas, where up to 30 visitors were allowed in homes and masks were only mandatory in certain indoor settings.
Senior ministers, health officials and the Premier have been meeting this morning to finalise the new restrictions, which are set to be announced before noon.
