First-week vaccine issue not ideal, Minister says
Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services Richard Colbeck has also been having a chat on News Breakfast about the higher-than-prescribed vaccine issue in Brisbane, saying "I wasn't overly impressed myself" about the communication issues that have emerged since.
"This is the sort of thing we didn't want in the first week. It should not have happened. We're talking about a medical professional in these circumstances, a doctor, who had been provided with the training material but hadn't completed it," he says.
"We're obviously very distressed about that. We're very concerned for the residents. That was my first question, 'how are the residents?' The good thing is that the residents are OK."
Mr Colbeck says the government has been "very open about the circumstances" to encourage ongoing communication.
"We reported publicly what had occurred. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Michael Kidd, is undertaking an investigation. There have been conversations from the DCMO and the CMO, Professor Paul Kelly, with the Chief Health Officer in Queensland, and those communications will continue, as they should," he says.
"We are managing and running the rollout in aged care, and we are responsible for that. And we're happy to be up-front about that. This event should not have occurred. Let's be very clear about that. This should not have occurred. And there will be additional overlays and checks that are being undertaken right now to ensure we don't see a repeat of this."
Mr Colbeck said authorities are doing all they can to "ensure that the proper procedures are in place" and prevent something like this from happening again.
