NSW has recorded 28 consecutive days of no locally acquired COVID-19 cases — the longest stretch with no community transmission since the pandemic began.
Key points:
- The previous longest stretch without community transmission was 26 days
- NSW Health said the milestone was "pleasing" but warned there were still cases in hotel quarantine
- Victoria, which recorded 28 days without community transmission in November, is again in lockdown
Two cases were recorded in hotel quarantine in the past 24 hours.
And 16,302 people were tested in the 24 hours to 8:00pm last night.
The previous longest stretch without local cases was 26 days, when no cases were diagnosed in the reporting period between 8:00pm on November 6 and 8:00pm on December 2.
The 28-day stretch represents two average incubation periods free of community transmission.
However, in a statement, NSW Health said it should not be cause for complacency.
"While this milestone is pleasing, it does not mean we can drop our guard," the statement said.
"Cases are present in other states and are regularly being detected among international travellers arriving from overseas.
"It is therefore vital that we continue to follow public health advice and continue to maintain social distancing and good hygiene, wear masks on public transport, and come forward for testing with even the mildest of symptoms."
Victoria recorded 28 days free of community transmission back in November, following its second-wave lockdown.
The state is once again under lockdown in the wake of the virus escaping through hotel quarantine.
NSW health authorities continue to advise against non-essential travel to Victoria and, under a public health order enacted on Friday night, anyone entering NSW from Victoria since 11:59pm on February 12 must stay at home for five days.
Anyone under stay-at-home orders is allowed to leave their place of residence if they have a reasonable excuse.
Reasons can include shopping for essential items, medical and other care and caregiving, outdoor exercise, emergencies and essential work.
NSW Health said contact tracers had spoken to more than 95 per cent of the 7,000 people who were potentially exposed to the virus at Melbourne Airport between February 7 and 9 and subsequently travelled to NSW.
