Police have charged a man with shooting with intention to murder after a child was shot at a property in Connells Point in Sydney's south.
Key points:
- The girl is in a stable condition after surgery for serious injuries
- A man, 34, was arrested in Oatley after a police air and ground search
- The charged man did not apply for bail when he appeared in court
A nine-year-old girl was shot in the driveway of a home in Connells Point at about 6pm yesterday as she and her family were unloading groceries from the back of their car.
She was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Randwick Children's Hospital under a police escort.
Police said she remained in a stable condition after having surgery for injuries to her hips and buttocks.
The charged man, Mahmoud Rizk, did not apply for bail in Parramatta Local Court today, and the matter was adjourned to Downing Centre Court on July 14.
State Crime Command director Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Grant Taylor said the child's mother and two siblings were not injured, despite several shots allegedly being fired towards the house.
"As they were unpacking groceries from their vehicle, a person who had just exited a black BMW motor vehicle, came onto their driveway and let several shots from a firearm go in the direction of the house towards this family," he alleged.
"Thankfully the injuries are not life threatening, however, [they are] very serious."
Superintendent Taylor said a person living at the home was known to police, and police will allege that the shooting was targeted although the individual was not home at the time.
"That premises, we believe, was most definitely the intended target," he alleged.
"An individual at the premises is known to us, [but] whether the children were the intended target or not is yet to be determined."
Police found and arrested a 34-year-old man nearby on Neville Street in Oatley at about 7:15pm with the help of the Dog Unit and Pol Air.
Police are searching for a second person who is still at large.
The arrested man was taken to St George Police Station, where he was charged with one count of shoot at with intent to murder.
A red Mini Cooper containing items of interest and a burnt-out black BMW which was found on Annette Street at Oatley have been seized for forensic examination.
Superintendent Taylor said there was a rapid response to the shooting which resulted in the arrest.
"This shooting was a dangerous, ungainly act of violence that resulted in a child being rushed to hospital for surgery," Superintendent Taylor said.
"A multi-level response was immediately deployed, which saw Raptor Squad and other specialist officers work in unison to immediately locate an alleged offender within hours, and gather other crucial forensic evidence.
The incident is not related to a spate of gang shootings in Sydney being investigated by Task Force Erebus, .
Residents expressed concern about the incident, saying they were kept awake by helicopters during the night.
"This has been a quiet suburb, and it was quite a surprise to hear that and not a pleasant surprise at all," one man said.
"I hope it doesn't happen again."
"[It's] strange; we get cars going over the speed limit but nothing like this," one woman told the ABC.
"Anything unusual I guess is a bit of a worry, so I'm curious about what happened."
