Man dead after helicopter crash in Sydney’s north-west - Sydney Morning Herald

A man has died after a helicopter crashed in Sydney’s north-west on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to remote bushland off Tuff Hill Lane in South Maroota at 11.50am, where they found the helicopter on fire.

A crime scene has been established and will be held under police guard overnight, with a recovery operation and investigations to continue on Sunday. The remote location, as well as flooding and fire trails, have complicated emergency services’ work.

Sydney news helicopter pilot Andrew Millett spotted the plume of smoke and was first on scene.

“We were working covering the floods, over near Wisemans Ferry. We turned around and I saw just at that moment, a puff of very thick black smoke just starting to appear from the bush not too far from where we were, maybe about five kilometres,” Millett told Nine News.

“As we came over to the scene we initially thought someone was burning rubbish, and on closer look we realised it was an aircraft. When I saw part of the wreckage I realised it was a helicopter.

“We landed straight away just to see if there was anything we could do to help. After landing, I went straight up to the wreckage and it was engulfed in flames. It was a very severe impact, and there was nothing that I could do.”

Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said it had commenced a transport safety investigation into Saturday’s accident, with a team of officers to be deployed to the site on Sunday.

“Once on-site, investigators will examine the wreckage, map the accident site, and gather any available recorded data for analysis. The ATSB will also interview witnesses and other involved parties,” he said.

“The ATSB anticipates publishing a preliminary report detailing basic information gathered during the investigation’s evidence collection phase in approximately six to eight weeks.

“A final report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation, however, should any critical safety issues be identified at any stage during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact ATSB via witness@atsb.gov.au.
