He was buried in the sand and couldn't be pulled from the hole for some time.
Mr Taylor was airlifted from the island and rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon.
Queensland police said detectives were making "further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident", and believe there may be "numerous people who were present and are yet to speak with police".
"Officers are appealing to those people, as well as anyone who may have dash-camera footage from the northern end of Bribie Island on Saturday to come forward," a statement said.
Rangers from Queensland Parks and Wildlife were among the first on the scene and provided CPR to Mr Taylor before paramedics and rescue helicopters arrived.
First responders struggled to reach the remote campsite at the popular tourist destination, north of Brisbane.
