Emergency flood alerts issued for parts of Far North Queensland in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper — as it happened - ABC News

The weather bureau's Steve Hadley said the intense rainfall is easing slightly.

He said the actions of cyclones after they fall apart are notoriously hard to predict.

“What we’re looking at is that ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper, or the remnants of, hung around over Cape York for days and days," he said.

"Then you’ve had this setup on the east coast where we’ve got a coastal trough now, so the predictions have changed and adapting to that means we’ve ended up with this heavy to intense rainfall up around the north tropical coast where you get that convergence with the coastal trough.

"It’s just set up a heavy rainfall area that’s been really stubborn to shift due to that slow moving nature of ex-tropical cyclone Jasper.”

“Notoriously, tropical cyclones and their remnants are quite hard to predict, and it looks as though that’s proven the case over the last week.”
