Severe thunderstorms and the possibility of large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall potentially leading to flash flooding, have been forecast for Brisbane and parts of the south-east on Saturday.
The Bureau of Meteorology warned at 1.30pm thunderstorms were detected near the area west of Kilcoy, Woodford, Border Ranges National Park, and Rosewood.
“These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to north-east,” the bureau warned.
Just before 2pm, the bureau updated its warning to include Brisbane, Ipswich, Somerset, Scenic Rim, the Gold and Sunshine coasts, and the Moreton Bay areas.
“A severe thunderstorm cell is approaching Ipswich from the west,” the bureau said.
At 2.45pm, four-centimetre hail was reported near Beaudesert, while smaller hail was recorded in the Gold Coast Hinterland.
Other storms, which were moving towards the east and north-east, were also detected near Marburg, the NSW border, and Harrisville.
“They are forecast to affect the McPherson Range, Peak Crossing and Lamington National Park by 2.35pm and Wacol, Lake Manchester and Upper Brookfield by 3.05pm,” BoM warned.
The warning follows a significant storm which lashed Brisbane on Friday night, resulting in the death of a man, who was found by paramedics near fallen powerlines. Several airlines were also forced to cancel or divert flights on Saturday morning.
More to come.
