This morning's press conferences

There have been a lot of press conferences on coronavirus lately, and today looks like it won't be an exception.

At 8.30am there was an update out of Queensland on coronavirus-related border restrictions from Queensland Police Service Commissioner Katarina Carroll. (The video is in the 8.32am post)

At 11am there will be a New South Wales coronavirus update from Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Deputy Premier John Barilaro, Minister for Health Brad Hazzard, Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello and NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant.

There is no word yet on when Victoria's coronavirus update will be, but I will update this post once a time has been confirmed.

Unemployment rate reaches 22-year high in Australia

The nation's jobless rate has climbed by 0.3 percentage points to a 22-year high of 7.4 per cent because of economic damage wrought by the coronavirus pandemic, Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.

There are now 992,000 people officially unemployed, surpassing the 960,000 record set in December 1992.

Full-time employment fell by 38,100 in June, with 376,000 full-time positions gone since February. Women continue to struggle, with female full-time employment down by 5.2 per cent since February compared to 3.8 per cent for men.

The jobless rate would be almost 12 per cent but for the exclusion of 230,000 people who were considered employed in June but did not work one hour as they are being supported by the government's JobKeeper program, while 370,000 people have left the jobs market.

Earlier this week, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the "real" jobless rate was likely to be about 13.3 per cent.

Northern Territory borders reopen - except if you're from Victoria or Greater Sydney

Travellers - except those from Victoria and the Greater Sydney area - are officially allowed into the Northern Territory, which opens its borders today for the first time in almost four months.

As of Friday, people arriving in the Territory will not have to spend 14 days in quarantine.

Ahead of the NT's re-opening on Friday, Chief Minister Michael Gunner announced that visitors from Victoria, the Greater Sydney area and the Blue Mountains remain banned due to localised outbreaks in those areas.

"This situation in Sydney has the potential to get worse before it gets better, and we need to assume that it will get worse," Mr Gunner said.

"To open our borders to Sydney right now, when we don’t know the full extent of this cluster, would be a roll of the dice."

The Territory has had 31 cases, with 29 of those now recovered. Nobody has died of the virus there.

150 Victorian health workers infected with coronavirus

At least 150 Victorian healthcare workers are infected with COVID-19, an increase of 36 cases in the health sector workforce in just two days.

The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed on Thursday that of the 388 Victorian healthcare workers who had caught the virus since the pandemic began, 150 of the cases were still active. The department said the "vast majority" of the workers testing positive had been infected outside their workplaces.

It remains unclear how much of the health workforce is now in isolation as known contacts of diagnosed cases.

Victorian outbreaks linked to healthcare included 19 cases at the Northern hospital, 16 cases at The Alfred and 16 at Brunswick Private Hospital, while The Age and Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday revealed five Royal Children's Hospital healthcare workers had tested positive.

1150 vehicles turned away at NSW-Queensland border

More than 600,000 border permits have been issued by Queensland and more than 1150 vehicles have been turned around since July 3.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the numbers included new applications and re-applications for expired passes but the figures detailed the volume of people entering the state.

Police have met 379 flights statewide and processed nearly 30,000 passengers. At the borders more than 43,000 vehicles were intercepted across five vehicle checkpoints.

A new border pass form came in yesterday at midday requiring declarations that people had not been in NSW hotspots of Liverpool and Campbelltown.

Gold Coast Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler urged Tweed and Coolangatta residents seeking to cross the border to update their pass to ease their passage.

He said he had requested more “robust” border blockades in Coolangatta after complaints from residents that people were crossing the border inappropriately.

More than 1000 police are on the borders daily, with Queensland police commissioner Katarina Carroll saying they were bolstered by partner agencies such as the Australian Defence Force.

The press conference on border restrictions in Queensland is still going and can be viewed in a post below.

Coronavirus cases in India near one million

The number of coronavirus cases in India neared one million as infection numbers rose in the countryside, pushing authorities to reinstate lockdowns across several states.

New daily case numbers in India continue to rise, and the country has recorded almost 25,000 deaths from COVID-19, Johns Hopkins University data shows.

"The wellbeing of our members and staff remain our highest priority."

Frequently asked questions: where can you travel for exercise in Melbourne under coronavirus restrictions?

The state government has issued a big clarification this morning about where people in Melbourne's lockdown zone can exercise.

Here are some questions and answers provided to us by the government this morning:

I live in Spotswood and I go walking around the Tan because I feel safe there, can I continue to do this?
No. You should go walking at your nearest safe place.

I live in Fitzroy North, can I go to the bottle shop in South Melbourne because it has better gin?
No. You should go to the bottle shop closest to your home.

I am a member of a golf course 15km away and there is a public course around the corner from my house, am I allowed to play golf at the course 15km away?
If you are a member of a sporting club (shooting, lawns bowl, golf, tennis etc) then you can attend, providing the club is permitted to open under the restrictions. Exercise is not a permitted reason to enter regional Victoria, whether you have a membership at a regional sporting club or not.

I live in Coburg, but I love exercising around the Botanic Gardens, is this OK?
No. You should exercise in the park closest to your home.

I live in Essendon but I want to run around Rye Beach?
No. You should run near home.

I have a nice local dog walking park, but the park 5km away in Brighton is much nicer, am I allowed to walk there?
No, you should go to the closest place to your home.

I want to take the kids to the next suburb for a bike ride. Can I drive there and take the kids riding if we socially distance?
No, you should bike ride at the closest available location to your home.

There are three coffee shops in my suburb, but my favourite is three suburbs away. Can I go there?
No, you should go to the closest coffee shop to your home.

I've been looking forward to doing the Bay Trail bike ride. I live in Mulgrave and was planning to drive the car down with the bikes to hit the trail. Is this allowed?
No, you should go to the closest bike trail to your home.

How far away from my house can I ride my bike? How far away from my house can I power walk, jog, run?
You should show common sense in satisfying your exercise requirements, and go the minimum time and minimum distance that achieve this in your circumstances.

I love fishing and my favourite fishing spot is 15km away. I could fish nearer home but it's not great. Can I go to my favourite fishing spot?
No, you should go to the closest place to your home.

Melburnians caught exercising outside their local area could face $1652 fine

People could be fined $1652 for exercising in a location outside of their local area under Victoria’s COVID-19 lockdown rules.

In a clarification of its advice on travel restrictions, the state government has prohibited travelling to an area far away from home for exercise.

It means if you live in the suburb of Spotswood, you cannot drive 20 minutes to South Yarra to go for a walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens. Cyclists must stick to their closest cycling trails.

The latest stay at home directions released on July 10 say it is unreasonable to travel to a location for exercise, “where that type of exercise can be done closer to home”.

The rules prohibit travel to anywhere within or outside metropolitan Melbourne to purchase items or access services that are available closer to home.

A government spokeswoman said: “The whole way through this, we've been very clear that Victorians must use their common sense and stay close to home. Following the rules protects regional Victoria, our health system, and most of all the ones we love.”
