Another COVID case in SA, fifth in just over a week - The Advertiser

South Australia has recorded another case of COVID-19 – the 6th this month – after a young man tested positive upon his return home from Victoria.

The South Australian resident, aged in his 20s, drove back from Victoria alone on July 26, had a test on arrival then isolated as required.

His one close contact is now also in quarantine and is being tested.

The man was considered an essential traveller but was not delivering freight.

Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier was unsure if he was a truckie.

She said he had travelled more than the 40km “border community” distance into Victoria but was unsure if he had been in Melbourne. He is stable with mild symptoms.

It brings the state total to 449 cases including four active cases.

Four people have died and 441 people have recovered.

“Let’s keep our fingers crossed we don’t get to 500 cases,” Prof Spurrier said, urging vigilance with social distancing, hygiene and staying home if ill.

She said the man had done “absolutely the right things” in being tested and isolating on arrival and was not likely to pose a public health risk.

“He is not a risk to South Australia but this shows the very real risk from Victoria,” Prof Spurrier said.

She urged South Australians not to travel to the state.

As of 3pm, 119,865 travellers have entered South Australia in the past sixty days, including 66,549 deemed essential travellers.

This includes a surge since July 24 when it was announced the border with Victoria would be closed to all but essential travellers, including South Australian residents returning home.

From July 24 to July 29, 13,217 travellers entered SA, including 8625 essential travellers – a marked increase on previous weeks.

Both Prof Spurrier and Health and Wellbeing Minister Stephen Wade downplayed a robust discussion in the Transition Committee on whether to tighten restrictions applying to venues such as bars and restaurants on numbers allowed in, resulting in the status quo.

There have been 233,500 COVID-19 tests done in SA including from private laboratories helping SA Pathology.
