A man in his 80s has become the 54th person in NSW to die after testing positive to COVID-19, health authorities have confirmed.
Key points:
- Five new cases have been reported, including three linked to the Tangara School for Girls cluster
- The state has issued new alerts for four restaurants, including three in Sydney
- NSW Health provided no details about where the man who died contracted the virus
It comes as the state records five new cases — the lowest number in more than a month.
There are no details at this stage about how the man contracted the virus or where he was living.
Among the five new cases are three close contacts linked to the Tangara School for Girls outbreak in north-west Sydney.
The brings the total number of cases in the Tangara cluster to 25.
The other two cases are a man in his 40s in Western Sydney, and a close contact of the man.
The source of those infections is under investigation.
The last time NSW reported five cases was on July 12, before the Crossroads Hotel outbreak exploded, leading to a total of 58 cases.
Meanwhile, a party-bus operator has been fined $5000 after police found 43 people on board last night.
Police stopped the bus as it was travelling near Darling Harbour in the Sydney CBD.
Police alleged several underage people on board were intoxicated.
A 17-year-old female was also arrested after allegedly being found with cocaine.
The operator, a 25-year-old man from Colyton in Western Sydney, has been issued the fine from a penalty infringement notice.
Alerts issued for restaurants
NSW Health has also issued new alerts for four venues across the state, including three in Sydney.
It said previous cases had attended the venues, and anyone there at the same time should monitor for symptoms.
The alerts are for:
- Crust Pizza, Concord, on Thursday, August 6, between 4:00pm and 8:00pm or Friday, August 7, between 5:00pm and 9:00pm
- Den Sushi, Rose Bay, on Saturday, August 8, between 7:15pm and 8:45pm
- Cafe Perons, Double Bay, on Saturday, August 8, between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.
- Horderns Restaurant at Milton Park Country House Hotel and Spa, Bowral, on Sunday, August 2, between 7:45pm and 9:15pmI.
It follows fresh warnings issued yesterday about other restaurants in the state, including a new outbreak announced yesterday at the Smithfield RSL in Western Sydney.
The RSL outbreak is at its Chopstix Asian Cuisine restaurant and has so far involved two staff members.
Any diners who visited there from July 31 to August 9 have been asked to monitor for symptoms.
The state recorded 24,093 tests in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, compared with 27,839 in the previous period.
More than 1.83 million tests have been conducted overall.
There are currently 3,761 active cases, with seven people in intensive care.
