A large-scale search is underway for two canyoners who have been missing since being caught in a whirlpool in a NSW Blue Mountains river yesterday morning.
There are grave fears for the two women, aged 24 and 39, who were part of a 10-person guided tour when they disappeared beneath the water's surface in Wollangambe Canyon at Mount Wilson.
Because of the area's remote location, the alarm was not raised with police until 2:30pm.
Due to poor weather conditions, the initial search was suspended about 6:00pm yesterday and search crews were out in force again at first light.
Police rescue officers, along with police divers, a specialty paramedic team and National Parks and Wildlife Service workers were onsite this morning.
It is hoped the weather will allow for a police helicopter to be deployed.
The other members of the group were unharmed.
