NSW records eight new coronavirus cases - NEWS.com.au

NSW has recorded 11 new coronavirus cases, eight of which were locally transmitted, the state’s acting leader has said.

There were over 18,000 tests conducted in the 24-hour period until 8pm on Saturday night, according to Deputy Premier John Barilaro.

He took charge of the COVID-19 update on Sunday after Premier Gladys Berejiklian began a week-long holiday.

The new figures come as an outbreak that started in Sydney’s northern beaches in mid-December has spread through many other parts of the city and even into Victoria.

Five of the new cases were linked to a new cluster in the western Sydney suburb of Berala, where a bottle shop has emerged as a hotspot of virus transmission.

That cluster has been linked to a strain sourced to a patient transport worker who transported a family returning from overseas.

“We know this transmission event has happened through very minimal exposure,” NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said.

Anybody who visited the BWS store at the Berala Shopping Centre at certain times from December 22 through to New Year’s Eve will be considered a close contact and should get tested and self-isolate for 14 days, regardless of the test result.

The relevant times are as follows:

  • Tuesday 22 December 2020 between 12:45pm to 9:15pm
  • Wednesday 23 December 2020 between 12:45pm to 9:15pm
  • Thursday 24 December 2020 between 12:45pm to 9:15pm
  • Saturday 26 December 2020 between 9:55am to 7:15pm
  • Sunday 27 December 2020 between 12:45pm to 8:15pm
  • Monday 28 December 2020 between 8:30am to 7:15pm
  • Tuesday 29 December 2020 between 1:45pm to 9:15pm
  • Wednesday 30 December 2020 between 12:45am to 9:15pm
  • Thursday 31 December 2020 between 8:30am to 5pm

More than 2000 people have been contacted after visiting the store and told to self-isolate, Dr Chant said.

Two other local cases were linked to the northern beaches cluster, which now has 148 cases associated with it.

Another of the local cases is a contact of a previously reported infected person in Wollongong.

There were three new cases in hotel quarantine.

The return to COVID-19 chaos in NSW has prompted the state government to mandate face masks, a step officials refused to take until this weekend.

Anybody caught without a mask in certain public indoor settings risks a fine of $200 from Monday.

Stores, public transport, cinemas, theatres, places of worship, hair and beauty salons, and aged care facilities will be off-limits to anyone not wearing a mask.

More to come.
