Fears over WHO COVID-19 origins report
International virus experts have written an open letter calling for another investigation into the source of COVID-19, citing fears that China had too much control over the last one.
The academics say finding the origin of the strain is critically important to addressing the current pandemic and reducing the risk of another one.
Infection control expert Mary-Louise McLaws was on ABC News a short time ago, she says she doesn't share the same concerns.
"This letter. It's written in American English and it says to me it's very political. They haven't given any other reason other than their fear this will happen again."
"It doesn't improve any of our knowledge. Again, it goes to politicising the origin. Now, we've had many pathogens that have sadly come out of some sort of zoonosis and we have never found the origin. And we have never shamed a country, particularly as we have seen from America, from the previous administration, to try to shame the source country. They use the term conflict of interest. I would suggest to them, as they seem to think, there's conflict of interest and compromise in the report findings, that perhaps any other team that would go also would have a compromised situation where of course you have to have a consensus. So this group seems to think that coming up with a consensus is compromised."
The World Health Organization will be releasing the report later this month.
