“On behalf of all Australians, our thoughts are with residents impacted by the rain and flooding in New South Wales and Queensland. It is important that everyone listens to the authorities, stay safe and look out for each other,” a statement from the Governor-General said.

“Our sincere thanks also go to the outstanding men and women of the State Emergency Service and other organisations assisting with the response.

“Again, these are incredibly trying times and the immediate focus is, of course, on safety and getting through the immediate danger.

“We should also take strength from the way our communities have responded to other recent emergencies and challenges.”

‘If it is flooded, forget it’: PM

By Laura Chung

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he has been warned the weather event is likely to become more complex as it reaches across the country.

“A trough on the east coast has merged with a trough extending from the Kimberley to the east coast causing heavy rain and inland flooding. This is moving to not just being a coastal event,” he said. “NSW, south-western Queensland and east and west Australia have been affected by inland flooding. Brisbane and the Gold Coast have been impacted by heavy rain and that is causing flash flooding.”

He added that there were 18,000 people who had been given evacuation orders, with 16 orders spanning 24 locations.

“As difficult as this issue is, people are remaining calm. We need to see them continuing to follow the instructions that are out there. If it is flooded, forget it,” he said.

Mr Morrison flagged that conditions along the South Coast will worsen and could see up to 300mm of rain.

“The potential for major flooding in the Murray Darling basement is anticipated and major flooding may continue in the Hawkesbury and Nepean until Friday and western Sydney remains the area of greatest concern.”

The ADF is currently assisting with evacuations in the Richmond and Colo regions in NSW, where hundreds of residents are being forced to leave their homes.

“No lives to this point have been lost thankfully, we pray that will continue to be the situation,” he said.

State Emergency Operations Centre activated amid severe weather

By Laura Chung

The State Emergency Operations Centre at Homebush has been activated following severe wet weather and flooding throughout New South Wales.

The team will access live information, intelligence sharing, digital mapping, as well as public information to quickly get critical information to the public.

The Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliott, reinforced the importance of flood-threatened communities working with emergency services and observing any directions they are given.

“We don’t want to see people going into flood-affected areas and then finding themselves in difficulty. It not only puts their own lives at risk but the lives of the emergency service workers and rescuers also,” Mr Elliott said.

“It’s about making smart decisions and following the advice of experts.

“That way, our responders can concentrate their efforts on helping people in most need during this extraordinary and significant weather event.”

The State Emergency Operations Controller, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys, has appealed to flood-affected communities to observe warnings and evacuation orders as police work closely with the SES and other emergency service agencies.

“This severe weather event is impacting communities across the state. The State Emergency Operations Centre will bring agency operations together under the one roof to manage the situation in real-time,” Deputy Commissioner Worboys said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has moved to reassure people despite the drastic weather conditions, help is available.

“For those reasons, we are limited in how we can help people. But no matter where you live, no matter how isolated you feel, help will get to you,” she said.
