Two men arrested yesterday as part of a counter-terrorism operation in Melbourne are set to face court today.
Key points:
- Two men, aged 19 and 20, will face court charged with attempting a terrorist act
- The men were arrested by counter-terrorism police on Wednesday
- One of the men is also charged with being a member of ISIS
A 19-year-old man from Epping has been charged with multiple terrorism offences, including being a member of ISIS and an attempted terrorist act.
A second man, aged 20, also from Epping, has been charged with attempting a terrorist act.
The two men were moved last night from the headquarters of the Australian Federal Police, where they were being questioned.
The 20-year-old man was taken to hospital on a stretcher after suffering a medical episode.
A third person arrested yesterday — a 16-year-old boy from Pascoe Vale — was questioned by police but released without charge.
Police said the operation was ongoing, but they were not expecting to make any more arrests.
The counter-terror operation was prompted by investigations into two events: a fire started in bushland in the Epping area on February 18, and an assault in metropolitan Melbourne on March 10.
