Tactical police swarmed the scene of an armed hold-up at a pharmacy in a Perth suburb that saw the highway closed in both directions.
Dramatic images from the stand-off showed officers with their weapons drawn and aimed at the doorway of Pharmacy 777 at a shopping precinct beside the Canning Highway in Applecross, south of the city.
A man reportedly walked into the pharmacy with a gun and said “today is the day” at around 4.30pm WST. He was also claimed to have a bomb, 9News reports.
Pharmacy 777 Applecross posted on Facebook that it was temporarily closed until further notice “due to the incident unfolding”.
“At this time, we can reassure you our team has been evacuated and our key concern is the safety of our local community,” the post read.

Locals said the incident sounded “terrifying” and said they were thinking of everyone involved.
It is understood that all the customers and staff were safely evacuated but the armed gunman remains in the building, the ABC reported.
Ambulance, police cars and helicopters were at the scene as the stand-off stretched into the evening and officers used benches to barricade the pharmacy door.
A nearby business owner, who did not want to be named, told the ABC there were “police and guns everywhere” and no customers were able to enter or leave his shop.
Canning Highway remains closed from Wilcock Street to Simpson Street in Applecross.
Main Roads WA said emergency services were onsite and warned motorists to “exercise extreme caution” and “avoid the area”.
