New variant of concern spreading through Vietnam
Australian medical experts are eyeing the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in Vietnam with concern.
Vietnamese authorities say the variant, that's led to a spike in infections, is a combination of the Indian and UK COVID-19 variants.
Epidemiologist Catherine Bennett of Deakin University says it's important to keep track of the mutation, as it could mean easier airborne transmission of the virus.
“It's been an important consideration in places like hotel quarantine, where that's been our challenge,” she said.
“But generally what we're seeing is very close contact high transmission rates, but if that were to spread to more casual contacts with a more airborne variant of this virus, that would be a real challenge for us.”
