The mental health impacts of another lockdown
Patrick McGorry, who is the executive director of Orygen, just spoke to News Breakfast about the mental health impacts of Victoria's fourth lockdown.
"People have different vulnerabilities and different issues. I think some people will have been strengthened by having had the experience before, they know what to do, they know how to cope.
"For others, it will be what we call a second injury. If you are traumatised or have other vulnerabilities from a mental health point of view, and so many people do, it might actually have the reverse effect on people really need help.
He added there has been a surge of calls to Beyond Blue, adding "that would be from the second group."
"But I think some people think, 'OK, we can hang in for a few more days, if it is only a few days, if it is just a circuit breaker,' that will be one thing.
"But if it goes on for weeks I would be very worried about what will happen from a mental health point of view."
He added that while the state and federal governments "did an incredible thing" by investing in the mental health system, "it is going to be very slow before it really benefits anybody because of the big turnaround".
