WA Health Minister urged to resign by parents of girl who died waiting for treatment at Perth Children's Hospital - ABC News

The parents of a girl who died after waiting to be seen at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH) have now called for the WA Health Minister to resign.

Aishwarya Aswath succumbed to an infection after waiting nearly two hours in the emergency department of PCH on Saturday, April 3.

Father Aswath Chavittupara said everyone from the Health Minister Roger Cook down should resign.

"Our idea is everyone involved in this incident has to go," he said.

"They shouldn't be allowed to continue because they let us down."

Since the seven year old's death, inquiries have been launched, the chair of the board of the Child and Adolescent Health Service has resigned, and the chief executive made an offer to resign but it was not accepted.

The WA government announced increases in staff at the PCH ED.

Mr Chavittupara said a petition calling for resignations had been organised to try to enforce more change.

"We are starting with the health minister right down to the staff on the floor that night," he said.

"Over the last few weeks, we have seen a lot of spinning from the government, a lot.

"First they say something and after a few days, they change the statement.

"And so we thought they don't have the right intentions in solving this."

Mother Prasitha Sasidharan said her intention was to make sure that something similar didn't happen to someone else in the future.

"It's like now or never," she said.

"So we need a change now and we are fighting for other parents as well.

"No parent should go through the same situation again."

AMA renews call for resignation

The parents have received the support of AMA president Andrew Miller, who has previously called for Mr Cook to stand down.

"These parents are entitled to do whatever they want," he said.

"They have had to contend with the fact that this has been predicted before.

"We think there's been four years of failure in health in Western Australia, ambulance ramping has gone through the roof, the staff morale is at an all-time low.

"We know that others are saying that this minister could just drop all of his other portfolios, that would certainly be a step forward.

"But there's plenty of talent in the Labor ministry and we think that maybe a reset at this stage would mean there'll be someone there who will listen to the frontline staff."

Mr Cook has said his commitment to Aishwarya's parents had been "unswerving".

"I promised to get to the bottom of what happened to Aishwarya and to take whatever action is necessary to prevent it from happening again," he said in a statement.

"The root cause analysis made 11 recommendations.

"They are all being acted on."

Mr Cook said he'd launched an independent inquiry into the Child and Adolescent Health Service concerning the care of Aishwarya.

"We have promised to introduce Aishwarya's Care — in consultation with the family — at all Western Australian hospitals with paediatric care.

"I have supported the family both publicly and privately at every opportunity, including the recent rally at Perth Children's Hospital.

"At the same time, I have supported the nurses and doctors at Perth Children's Hospital.

"It is important that we not lose sight of what is absolutely vital and should never be forgotten, both now and in the future.

"Everyone has the same goal — to provide the best care possible for the children of Western Australia."

Nursing federation makes 'first ever' referral to APHRA

The Australian Nursing Federation, meanwhile, has referred three members of the Child and Adolescent Health Service executive to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

State secretary Mark Olson said it was the first time it had happened.

"We've had the nurses and a doctor concerned referred to AHPRA, that's the frontline staff," he said.

"We've had the director-general and the chief executive referred to AHPRA.

"But there's a big gap in the middle and that gap is filled by the nursing executive.

"They're the ones who are responsible for the systems being put in place, within which the frontline staff work."

Mr Olson said he was not calling for Mr Cook to resign but would be happy to see the entire PCH executive resign.
