A male surfer has died after being bitten by a shark on the NSW Mid North Coast.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called about 11.15am on Tuesday to Tuncurry Beach.
Four ambulance crews treated the man, aged in his 50s, who was bitten on his upper thigh while he was surfing.
Paramedics and police officers performed CPR on the man and a specialist medical team in a helicopter flew up from Sydney.
But at 12.40pm the man had died.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics and bystanders at the scene the man could not be resuscitated,” NSW Ambulance said.
On Monday night, a tagged great white shark was detected at Main Beach in Forster, about two kilometres south of Tuncurry Beach.
The Department of Primary Industries, which is responsible for fisheries, said it was still gathering information about the attack.
Tuncurry Beach and Main Beach are closed while police work with the department to identify which shark species was involved.
