'Help, I'm going to die': Neighbour helps save life of stabbing victim in Sydney unit - 9News

Police have found a knife allegedly used in a stabbing that left a man in a critical condition in Sydney's west overnight.

Just before 7am, police were called to a unit complex on Isabella Street in North Parramatta after 24-year-old Hasanein Mousavi was found with multiple stab wounds.

Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes.

NSW Ambulance Chief Inspector Brian Parsell said Mr Mousavi had multiple stab wounds to the chest and leg.

"He had critical injuries to the chest, obviously close to the heart and lungs, paramedics rapidly identified if they didn't get him to the hospital quickly he may die on scene," Mr Parsell said.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police said Mr Mousavi is lucky to be alive.

"The gentleman is very, very lucky that we're not looking at a homicide investigation right now," Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Barnes said.

Police believe the attack took place inside the unit.

"We believe the initial incident took place inside the unit there is blood and other forensic material inside the unit which is consistent with that," Mr Barnes said.

"There is also regrettably a large amount of blood in the common area of the unit block where the male was located."

Witnesses said Mr Mousavi could be heard screaming out for help.

Residents in the building ran to assist the 24-year-old.

"He was saying help, help, I'm going to die, I'm going to die," Steven Quartermain, a neighbour who helped, said.

"When someone cries out for help like that, normal human instinct is to just help."

Mr Barnes praised the residents for "bravely" assisting Mr Mousavi.

Police located a knife at the unit which has been seized for forensic examination.

"It is not a knife that we would normally describe as being in a domestic setting," Mr Barnes said.

"It's the type of blade that would normally be described as a lock blade or a hunting style/camping knife."

Mr Barnes said Mr Mousavi was known to police "in some capacity".

"However we're yet to establish any links between that and what occurred last night," Mr Barnes said.
