Sydney indoor climbing gym suspected place of transmission for Omicron cluster - 9News

A Sydney indoor climbing gym is suspected to be the source of transmission for a cluster of Omicron cases.

The new cases are classmates of the Year Nine student who tested positive on Friday morning.

It's believed transmission may have occurred between the students while at Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym in Villawood.

The venue has been listed as an exposure site by NSW Health.

Anyone who attended the gym on Saturday November 27 from 9am to 4.30pm is now a close contact.

They must immediately get tested and isolate according to NSW Health guidelines.

The school outbreak is the clearest indication yet that Omicron is in the community and on the move, with NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard saying authorities had "no idea" how the students caught the variant.

"It would appear that the case could well be an on NSW soil transmission," Mr Hazzard said.

Authorities have been testing 10 other students linked to the school for the Omicron variant.

NSW Health said today two cases have been excluded following further investigation.

Results on more Omicron cases are likely to be announced by NSW Health later today.

It comes as two further Omicron cases were detected yesterday in returned travellers who are family members of a child who tested positive on Thursday.

The family arrived on flight QR908 from Doha to Sydney on November 23.

They are now isolating in the Special Health Accommodation.

There are now 13 cases of the Omicron variant in NSW.

NSW has recorded 325 new cases to 8pm last night, a slight drop from yesterday's numbers.

One person has died with the virus.

There are 139 people in hospital and 25 in intensive care.

More than 92 per cent of people over the age of 16 are now fully vaccinated in the state.

Australian Capital Territory sees first Omicron case

The ACT has also recorded its first known case of the Omicron variant yesterday.

It's not yet known whether a case of the strain was picked up in the nation's capital or NSW.

The person had not travelled overseas.

The ACT recorded seven new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

Of the seven new cases confirmed today, one case is a close contact of the Omicron case announced yesterday.

Genomic sequencing is currently underway to determine whether that case also has the variant of concern.

Victoria records 1365 COVID-19 cases

Victoria has recorded 1365 new cases in the past 24 hours.

This is a jump in the state's daily case numbers, compared to yesterday's 1189 infections.

A further nine people have died with the virus.

There are 288 people in hospital and 44 people in intensive care.
