Doctors push for children over five to be vaccinated before WA's hard border comes down
The Australian Medical Association in WA wants the McGowan government to only reopen the state's borders once 90 per cent of the population aged over five are fully vaccinated — even if that means further delays.
The government plans to reopen WA once 90 per cent of the state's population aged over 12 are fully vaccinated, which is likely in late January or early February.
But the national vaccine rollout has now been significantly expanded, after Australia's medical regulator provisionally approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for children as young as five.
That means those children could start to be vaccinated from early January, and before the 2022 school year starts — it would also be before WA reopens its borders.
Premier Mark McGowan is likely to announce the exact date this coming week, after 80 per cent of WA's population aged over 12 have had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
But AMA WA president Mark Duncan-Smith wants the policy changed.
"I think now that we have approval for the five-year-olds and over I think they should be taken into account, because the ANU/UWA study suggested that to avoid significant mortality and morbidity or disease that we needed to get 90 per cent of the total population vaccinated," Dr Duncan-Smith said.
"So now that we have the five-year-olds and over approved then I would like to see them included in the figures of 90 per cent."
