Passengers on a light plane which was forced to complete an emergency landing at Perth Airport on Tuesday have spoken highly of the pilot who managed to touch down with no major incidents.
The Star Aviation twin turbo propeller aircraft carrying 11 passengers had reported a landing indicator problem when the landing gear collapsed as the plane touched down.
The plane flew in around 10.40am from Rothsay gold mine site in the Mid West region, carrying fly-in-fly-out workers. Flight tracking showed the plane looped around Perth before eventually landing.
St John Ambulance were called to the scene, reporting four minor injuries as a result of the crash, but passengers on board said the most they suffered was nausea. Other emergency crews were also in attendance.
One of the passengers, Dave Bradford, spoke to Nine News Perth and joked it had been a “textbook crash.”
“[The] pilot did a great job. It was just loud, it was quite smooth, the plane just skidded along on its belly,” he said.
Another passenger Marco Teixeira, told Nine News Perth the pilot was a “bloody champion, legend.”
“The tail was scraping all the way for about 500 to 600 metres and a bit of smoke came out the back,” he said.
Another passenger who chose to go by his first name Matt, said it had been a “pretty scary” experience, but the main thing was everyone was safe.
“I was panicking, most of the guys were. It was pretty scary... The pilot did really well,” he said.
A Perth Airport spokesman said passengers had disembarked from the plane and their health and care had been the top priority.
The passengers were escorted off the tarmac by a bus.
“Operations on the main runway are not affected,” he said.
The incident has been reported to Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
Engineers will review the aircraft, and it will be moved once safe to do so. A runway review will be conducted to ensure it is safe to use again.
