New South Wales Health has confirmed that one of the four "potentially infectious" COVID cases that attended a Newcastle nightclub earlier this week is "likely to have the Omicron variant".
Key points:
- Health officials say Omicron cases in the Hunter are bound to rise
- The Argyle House nightclub has been listed as an exposure site
- It is not clear whether Newcastle's first confirmed Omicron case visited the venue
Anyone who was at the Argyle House between 9pm on Wednesday, December 8 and 3am on Thursday, December 9, is a close contact and must get tested and isolate immediately.
The update follows the confirmation of the Newcastle's first Omicron case — a female traveller who had returned from the United Kingdom.
Hunter Public Health Controller David Durrheim said the woman was safely isolating at home.
"The young lady returned from the UK and she has been doing the right thing — she has been isolating for the full period she had been infectious in Australia," he said.
Sydney cruise links
Three of the nightclub patrons are linked to a party boat cruise on Sydney Harbour last weekend that has been the source of multiple Omicron infections.
NSW Health said a public health investigation was underway intothe transmission of the virus.
Dr Durrheim said more Omicron cases were expected in the Hunter region.
"We probably should prepare that we are going to get more Omicron cases coming in from overseas with open borders," he said.
"It is very important that we don't ignore even the mildest of symptoms … fever, sore throat, a runny nose, a cough, should prompt us to again get tested."
There are 178 active cases of COVID-19 in the Hunter New England Health District.
