The family of alleged murder victim Jesse Baird have broken their silence as police continue to search for the bodies of Mr Baird and his partner Luke Davies.
In a heartfelt tribute to his “best friend” and cousin, Austin Baird took to Instagram to share some of his favourite childhood memories with the former Channel 10 entertainment reporter.
“Jesse, my first ever best friend, I am beyond devastated. I still can’t believe it. Most of my favourite memories in life were me, Luke, Brendan and you riding motorbikes, skiing, boating and camping,” he said in a post.
“I’ll never forget our chats, all the times we would hang out on the weekends and go away with family and friends. I told you things I’d never tell anyone. I trusted you, I’ve laughed and cried in front of you!
“You were one in a million, you cared about everyone and left such an impact on every person you met!
“I’m so glad we got to have such a grouse night together at Rikki’s the other weekend! I’ll love and remember you forever mate. It is an honour to be your cousin. Till we meet again.”
The moving tribute comes after police revealed they were investigating a “gap in the timeline” in the alleged double murder of Mr Baird and Mr Davies by serving police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon.
Specialist police divers and the Riot Squad looking for the couple’s bodies were brought in on Monday to assist in the search of two dams at a remote rural property in Bungonia, in NSW’s Southern Tablelands region.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson said police were investigating whether Beau Lamarre-Condon, who has been charged with the alleged murders, had returned on Thursday having travelled to the property days after the deaths.
“We believe that it is possible the accused, in that gap in the timeline, has returned to that property and retrieved the bodies and disposed of them somewhere else,” Mr Hudson said.
“We are still working through that theory and we are obviously commencing and have undertaken significant inquiries in relation to that.
“I can indicate that the accused has not disclosed of where Jesse and Luke are ...but it is our number one priority at this moment to try and locate Jesse and Luke to give the family some solace and be able to come to terms with what has occurred.“
Mr Hudson police were investigating the “gap” in the timeline of Lamarre-Condon’s whereabouts, specifically from 11.30am on Thursday until 8.30pm that day, when he appeared at an acquaintance’s property in Newcastle.
In an expansive press hour-long conference, Mr Hudson gave new and grizzly details about the pair’s alleged murder at Paddington and the whereabouts and activity of the accused.
Police allege the couple were killed by Mr Lamarre-Condon inside Mr Baird’s Paddington home sometime between 12am and 5:30pm on Monday, and that gunshots were reported to have been heard in the area.
Mr Hudson said police would allege Mr Lamarre-Condon then travelled with an acquaintance the day after the alleged killing in a rented van to the Bungonia property, having purchased bolt cutters and a padlock.
While at the property, Mr Lamarre-Condon is alleged to have disappeared with the van while his acquaintance waited. The woman is now “fully cooperating” with police and is not accused of any wrongdoing.
Mr Lamarre-Condon is alleged by police to have returned to the Bungonia area on Thursday morning after acquiring weights and torches before next being seen in the Newcastle area later that evening.
Mr Lamarre-Condon called in sick on Tuesday and failed to show up to work the next day. His pistol, which was allegedly fired inside the home, was checked back into a suburban police station that day.
The 28-year-old appeared before Waverley Local Court on Friday afternoon and did not apply for bail. His case was adjourned to April 23.
The case has sparked criticism of NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, who did not front the media in-person until Monday, as well as calls for NSW Police to not attend Saturday’s Mardi Gras parade.
Ms Webb has responded to the criticism calling it “offensive” and noting that she was before budget estimates on Friday.
