A man climbed the outside of a high-rise building in Melbourne’s CBD on Tuesday morning without clear safety equipment.
Talkback callers on radio station 3AW reported a person scaling the building without a safety harness near the corner of Elizabeth and A’Beckett streets shortly before 8am.
Videos posted on social media showed the climber wearing a backpack, ascending along a beam past balconies, untethered to the building.
Victoria Police later said a 29-year-old man from Newry – a Gippsland town 170 kilometres east of Melbourne – was found at the top of the building about 8.20am before officers escorted him down safely.
“He is currently assisting police with their enquiries,” a police statement said.
“Police spoke to a second man who was filming the incident on a drone, it is expected he will be interviewed at a later date. No one was injured in the incident.”
Victoria Police said it first received reports of a man scaling a building on A’Beckett Street with no safety equipment at 7.30am.
Trent, a tradesperson working nearby who called into 3AW, said the building appeared to be about 60-storeys tall.
“One hundred per cent, [it’s] not a window-washer,” he said.
“We’ve watched people in the street looking up, so we’ve come to have a look ourselves, and then we’ve looked up and there’s a guy.”
Trent said the climber “has definitely got the nickname of Melbourne’s Spider-Man”.
He later said the climber stopped four storeys from the top, where police were waiting for them.
“All the neighbours are out, looking out over [their] balconies, looking up,” Trent said.
He added that it looked like the climber had a chalk bag, typically used by free-climbers to improve their handholds.
“It’s a bloody big building, boys. I’d be lucky to climb a fence,” Trent said.
