‘What a joke’: Cash slams ‘chaotic handling’ of new IR reforms - Sky News Australia

Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash has slammed Labor for it’s “chaotic handling” of new industrial relations reforms which give workers the right to disconnect from work.

Turmoil erupted in the Senate on Thursday afternoon after it was discovered employers could be subject to criminal penalties for breaching the new provisions under the Closing Loopholes No 2 bill.

The government launched a last-minute bid to put through an amendment, however the Coalition blocked the move, arguing it did not support Labor's “sham legislative process”.

The bill later passed the Senate which will force the government to introduce legislation to prevent employers being penalised.

Ms Cash spoke to Sky News Australia shortly after the commotion, labelling the incident as a “total and utter farce”.

“When you have the numbers in the Senate, which Labor do, it's not much of a negotiation. When you have the numbers, the Australian Greens and David Pocock equals the numbers, and you rush legislation through with little to no scrutiny. Guess what? Mistakes are made,” she told host Peta Credlin.

“This chaotic handling today of the right to disconnect amendment by the Australian Greens has seen the Labor Party under Mr Albanese actually vote for criminal penalties for bosses who may call their employees after working hours.

“What a complete total and utter farce.”

Labor criticised for 'guillotining' legislation as lawyers 'could not keep up'

Ms Cash then hit out at Employment Minister Tony Burke, who she claimed was blaming her and the Coalition for the incident.

“Let me be very clear, Tony Burke … He is out there blaming me and the Coalition,” she said.

“Tony, I have this message for you. We voted against the Greens’ amendment. You voted for it. We voted against this bill. You voted for it.

“Labor now have to clean up the mess they've created. What a joke.”

The new IR reforms have attracted a raft of criticisms in recent days, with Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief Andrew McKellar arguing the provisions don’t make sense for many businesses.

“We've got to get the balance right. But, clearly there's no need for government to be imposing itself here with legislation, with penalties. That's ridiculous,” he said on Wednesday.

Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie agreed, arguing the right to disconnect laws were not workable.

“I just don’t know how this thing is going to function. I would have thought after going through COVID is that there is a lot more flexibility in the workforce with most businesses that have said you can work from home,” she said.

“We are going into really uncertain economic times this year and I just worry about that extra red tape for businesses… new industrial relations laws are supposed to lessen red tape especially for businesses out there and quite frankly I think these changes have just added to it.”
