The teenager accused of killing Vyleen White is a Sudanese refugee who was on bail for armed robbery when he allegedly murdered the grandmother, it has been reported.
Two other teenagers charged after Ms White’s death were private school students and one has alleged gang links, a court has heard.
Ms White was doing her grocery shopping at Town Square Redbank Plains Shopping Centre when she was allegedly stabbed in the underground carpark around 6pm on Saturday.
The 70-year-old had doubled back to check her car was locked when police allege she was fatally stabbed in the chest before her car was stolen for a 20-minute joyride.
Police arrested a 16-year-old boy at a unit complex in Bellbird Park on Monday. He was charged with murder, the unlawful use of a motor vehicle and stealing.
It has now emerged that the teen was charged with three armed robbery offences last year, and was on bail when he allegedly killed Vyleen.
On Tuesday his mother spoke to 9News and told Vyleen’s family she was sorry.
“I’m sorry to the community because I didn’t know that the kids do that,” the mother, who cannot be identified, said.
She said her son told her “I love you mum” as police put him in handcuffs and led him away.
The boy is a refugee from Sudan who came to Australia as a baby.
Four others – two 15-year-old boys and two 16-year-old boys – have also been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
One of the teenagers, a 16-year-old boy, was granted bail at Richlands Magistrates Court on Tuesday after he was charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
During the hearing it was claimed that he was not present at the time of Ms White’s alleged murder but was told to get in her car when the group of boys drove past a fast food restaurant and recognised him, the Herald Sun reported.
It was also revealed that he and another of the boys attend the same private school together.
Police Prosecutor Tom Wirawan opposed bail because he said there was a risk of reoffending.
He added that the boy had alleged associations with the Swish Bound Gorillas gang, believed to be behind a number of violent offences.
Magistrate Aaron Simpson granted bail, citing the fact that the boy was from a loving family and was supported by his mother and sister. He added that he had no previous criminal convictions.
He was ordered to return to school but to keep away from his co-accused.
Vyleen’s tragic last moments
It has been revealed Ms White had visited the supermarket to buy groceries before heading to bible study when she was allegedly confronted by a group of youths.
Her eldest daughter Cindy Micallef told A Current Affair Vyleen was heading into the shopping centre on a run-of-the-mill grocery run when she returned to her car to double check it was locked.
It was then alleged she was confronted by the teens.
Ms Milcallef said it would have been her mum’s nature to have been cooperative with someone if they needed a car.
“She would have said, ‘Here’s the keys.’ She would have said, ‘I don’t care, take it,’ as long as we are safe.
Victor White, the blind partner of Vyleen, said he was struggling to come to terms with the alleged murder.
Mr White said he would have been celebrating his 50th anniversary with Vyleen soon.
“All I knew, she went to (the) shop to get a few quick items and sitting here, hearing all police sirens going on and not long after, I get the knock on (the) door saying she was gone,” he said through tears.
“When this (person) stabbed my wife (they) stabbed four of us in the heart.
“(They) didn’t just kill her, (they) killed four of us with her.
“Justice has to be done, not for my sake, for the memory of Vyleen.”
