Victorian ICU nurse recovering from COVID-19
A young Melbourne nurse who contracted COVID-19 says he's almost back to normal after weeks of recovery.
Before becoming infected Daniel worked in a number of roles on the coronavirus frontline, including in community testing and caring for aged care residents at the hospital.
Daniel said initially his symptoms included a cough and low-grade fevers, but around the seven-day mark he started to feel unwell.
"It was just a slow progression of deterioration and so I was getting really short of breath," he told ABC Radio Melbourne today.
"I was walking to the door and my heart rate was getting up to 140 and I was needing a few minutes just to regain my breath, which is not common for me because I'm quite a fit young person as well."
The 24-year-old isolated in a hotel after testing positive for COVID-19 and has been resting at home since being released.
Daniel said he was no longer infectious, but he still doesn't feel 100 per cent because of some of the lingering effects of the disease, like a tickle in the throat caused by inflammation.
He also said he might need an ECG and chest x-ray to check for lasting complications.
"Having COVID really knocked me around," he said.
"I can't imagine what it would be like if you had other chronic health conditions on top of COVID, just because of how it knocked me around."
