Trump 'played down' coronavirus threat, recordings show
A series of damning audio excerpts from Donald Trump's interviews with veteran journalist Bob Woodward have revealed the US President knew how deadly the coronavirus was, even before the first confirmed American death.
The president reportedly received an intelligence briefing in late January, in which he was warned the world faced a health emergency on par with the flu pandemic of 1918.
Ten days later, he told journalist, Bob Woodward, just how deadly the virus was.
Audio excepts from the interview, which was one of 18 Woodward did with the president for his upcoming book, uncover startling revelations Donald Trump acknowledged playing down the virus's threat publicly, while being fully aware of its dangers.
" Bob, really, to be honest with you, I wanted to always play it down," he said.
"I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic.
"This is more deadly [than the flu].
"This is five per cent versus less than one percent. So, this is deadly stuff."
More than 6.3 million Americans have now contracted COVID-19, and 190,000 have died.
