Man charged with attack on police found dead in prison cell - Sydney Morning Herald

A man accused of attempting to murder a police officer and biting the hand of a Corrective Services officer has died in a western Sydney jail.

Frederick Fadi Elrezz had been in custody since September 2, when he allegedly attacked a group of three male police officers in Sydney's CBD, slashing one in the head and shoulder with a knife.

Mr Elrezz was hit with multiple charges after allegedly slashing a police officer in the face and biting a correctional officer this month.

A spokesperson for MTC-Broadspectrum, the company that operates Parklea Correctional Centre, said Mr Elrezz was found unresponsive in his cell at 8.15am on Friday.

"Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident," the spokesperson said.

"All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest."

Mr Elrezz's lawyer Oussama Elfawal said his client's death was a "terrible tragedy" and his condolences were with Mr Elrezz's family and friends.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a brief will be prepared for the coroner.

Earlier this month, police responded to reports of a man harassing a food delivery rider on George Street just after midnight on September 2 when they approached Mr Elrezz on York Street.

Police allege the 32-year-old Lakemba man then produced a knife from his pocket.

One officer was slashed across his head and shoulder and another officer was slashed on the hand. A third officer was then bitten on the arm before the group disarmed Mr Elrezz and arrested him.

The officers were treated for their injuries at St Vincent's Hospital.

Mr Elrezz's court appearance on September 3 was delayed amid fears for the safety of correctional staff.

It is alleged that while he was in the cells on September 3 Mr Elrezz assaulted two Corrective Services officers, biting one on the hand and spitting on the other.

On September 9, he was taken from a correctional facility to Riverstone police station and charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer while inflicting actual bodily harm and two counts of assaulting a law officer.

Mr Elrezz did not apply for bail and it was formally refused when he appeared at Blacktown Local Court on Wednesday.

He was due to appear in court for both matters in October.
