Fire burns for more than 12 hours near AFL finals hub on Gold Coast - Herald Sun

Plumes of smoke have been billowing across the Gold Coast sky for more than 12 hours from a persistent grassfire, potentially threatening the health of dozens of AFL players.

The fire along Palm Meadows Rd, Carrara, is burning in shrubland near Metricon Stadium and not far from Royal Pines Resort where Richmond, Western Bulldogs and Geelong players, their wives and partners, are staying during the AFL finals series.

Dramatic pictures show a helicopter water bombing the area which is near a housing estate and less than 2km from Metricon Stadium.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services announced late on Tuesday that they were close to ‘finalising blackening’ out the fire but at midday on Wednesday it was still burning with palls smoke drifting across the Gold Coast.

Yet by midday on Wednesday the QFES was warning people to close windows and doors because of the heavy smoke.

Some residents self-evacuated, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Channel 7 and the ABC both acquired footage of the fire which had approached within a few hundred metres of a housing estate.

The AFL confirmed some players and their families were staying at Royal Pines Resort while other players and family members were at KDV, a nearby facility, also in Carrara.

Reigning premier Richmond takes on Brisbane in a qualifying final at the Gabba on Friday night while the Bulldogs tackle the Saints, who are staying on the Sunshine Coast, on Saturday at the Gabba. Geelong has travelled to Adelaide for their clash with Port Adelaide tomorrow night.
