Man dead, teenager seriously injured after being stabbed at Canberra's Weston Creek Skate Park overnight - ABC News

An 18-year-old is dead and another teenager is injured after they were stabbed at a skate park in Canberra's south overnight.

Police were called to the Weston Creek Skate Park about 1:00am, after reports of a stabbing.

Paramedics treated the two young men — but an 18-year-old man with multiple stabbing injuries died at the scene.

A 16-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was undergoing surgery this morning.

It was unclear if the two men were known to each other, police said.

A crime scene was established on Dillon Close, just off Namatjira Drive, where emergency services have remained all morning.

The investigation into how the stabbings occurred is continuing.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Steel said police want to speak with a person who made a phone call to emergency services this morning about the attack.

"It was a call to triple-0, requesting police and ambulance at the scene," he said.

"It's a secluded area down here at the Weston skate park … we're still investigating how many people were involved.

"There could be other people involved, and that's why we're appealing for any information."

The stabbings occurred as residents in Weston Creek were preparing to hold a public meeting to discuss long-held concerns about a spike in anti-social activity in the area — including home-invasions, assaults, burnouts and illegal fireworks.

Arranged before the attack took place, the meeting went ahead this afternoon not far from the skate park where it happened.

One resident, Paul, said he was at home recently with his family when thieves broke in.

"They were bashing in the security door," he said.

"This [was] after they'd been inside the house to steal — they'd come back."

His was just one of many such stories from Weston Creek locals, who appealed to politicians and police alike for action.

Another community meeting is planned for later this week.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that could help police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference P2001072. Information can be provided anonymously.
