As NSW’s case numbers remain low, restrictions are set to ease across the state today, September 27.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced a raft of new measures earlier this week in an effort to return to a COVID normal, with many of the relaxed rules coming into effect over the weekend.
The main changes today concern weddings, sport and schools.

WHAT’S CHANGED ABOUT WEDDINGS?
Under the new rules, 150 people can attend a wedding, and now 20 of those people can go on the dance floor.
Ms Berejiklian was quick to clarify this would not be 20 people at a time, but 20 predetermined people in total, with other guests still not allowed to dance.
NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard suggested those 20 people consist of the bride and groom’s parents, as well as the bridal party.
Mr Hazzard revealed that one of the “single biggest requests to my office as health minister” was about changing wedding rules.
The move has been slammed as bizarre by some.
CAN I WATCH A SPORTS MATCH NOW?
From this weekend, more than one spectator per player will be able to watch a community sport game.
Essentially, two parents can watch their kid in the game.
Previously only one person was able to cheer on a family member or friend.
The changes have come just in time, with many grand finals kicking off this weekend.
“The maximum number of participants at a community sporting activity must not exceed 500 participants,” the NSW government said in a statement.
Social distancing must still be adhered to for people from different households.
WHAT ABOUT CHOIRS?
School and community choirs will be able to resume, limited to groups of five socially distanced singers.
Music ensembles will also return to normal.
An unlimited number of students are allowed in school bands, as long as social distancing can be adhered to.
“Group singing and chanting remains a high-risk activity for transmission should someone involved be infected,” the NSW Premier said.
RULES COMING IN LATER
Next term, school students will see much of their daily life return to normal.
Restrictions around school sport and extra-curricular activities will relax when term four begins, with inter-school and zone sporting competitions set to resume.
“We will be returning to school sport as it existed before the pandemic,” Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said.
“The only restriction that will remain is that we will not be able to have parents on school sites for school sports during a school day.
“But of course if school activities are taking place at community sport venues, they will be able to attend and follow the COVID-safe guidelines of those particular venues.”
WHAT RULES STAY THE SAME?
For now, the rules surrounding household visitors remain the same — only 20 people allowed.
Ms Berejiklian said any increase of the current 20-person limit in households for Christmas will depend on case numbers at the time.
“It‘s interesting to note Queensland has only lifted its restrictions of 10 people today … and they’re not welcoming back 3000 from overseas each week.”
